Mission
The mission of the Harvey B. Milk Foundation, a not-for profit charitable organization, is to provide opportunities that lift up the LGBT community along with other marginalized communities. The foundation will preserve, promote and apply the legacy and universal values of civil rights leader Harvey B. Milk.
Vision
Harvey's dream for a better tomorrow filled with the hope of equality and without prejudice guides the Foundation's vision. Through the Foundations program goals we strive to empower local, regional, national and global organizations so they can fully realize the power of the Harvey Milk style collaborative relationship building.
Additionally, we will provide inspiration to individuals – so Harvey’s example of the change that one individual can do is a permanent reminder and beacon of hope to all who yearn to be free.
Foundation History
Harvey Milk came from a very small immediate family having just one sibling, his brother Robert, whose son and Harvey’s nephew, Stuart Milk has been the family spokesperson and flame keeper for the past two decades. Stuart was just 17 years old when his uncle, Harvey Milk was assassinated in San Francisco. Stuart has continued to spread the conversations, stories and messages that Harvey brought to life. Joined by Harvey’s close friend, campaign manger, and political aide, Anne Kronenberg, the Harvey Milk Foundation was established to educate people about the life and work of this great American civil rights leader. The foundation’s mission works to inspire individuals, communities and organizations to carry on Harvey’s values and timeless vision for a better world for the LGBT and other communities that face discrimination because of their differences.
Stuart Milk, the Foundation founder and chairperson has worked diligently to bring forward the story of his uncle and worked successfully with the California Statewide Equality Organization to have every May 22 permanently celebrated as Harvey Milk Recognition Day. In giving Stuart Milk the 2009 Equality Champion Award, EQCA Executive Director Geoff Kors said, “no one represents the legacy of Harvey Milk better then his nephew and no one worked more tirelessly to personally obtain the support of Ambassadors, Senators, and finally the Governor to sign the Milk day bill, he is nothing less then amazing”.
Stuart Milk, Anne Kronenberg and others have traveled to every corner of the world spreading Harvey's struggle for justice, equality, and civil rights. The Foundation Harvey inspired is resonating stronger each day around the globe because of this vital work.
